Cloud 9 is the alternative design business in Greater Boston. I transform your spaces by rearranging and restyling what you already own. After maximizing your existing furnishings and decor, I can also help you make the smartest purchases, if you need supplemental pieces. (You'd be shocked how often clients decide, after I've done my thing, that they don't need anything new!) This revolutionary approach to design is better for the environment, and more affordable than traditional interior design. Plus, it only takes a half day for one transformed room. Voila.

My relationship to space, whether it's my place or yours, is intuitive, heartfelt, and irreverent enough to allow for breakthrough creativity. I don't subscribe to standard rules of design. You and I get to make our own rules, the kind that respect who you are, your real-life stuff, and how you live. And we get to have fun while we're doing it.

Home should be, and can be, your own little Cloud 9. And it doesn't have to cost a ton. Instead of trying to fix your lackluster space by buying lots of new stuff, let me first work my redesign magic!

Please note: for many years, Cloud 9 also offered organizing services, but I'm taking a break from that work to focus exclusively on redesign.

I look forward to helping you take back your habitat,

Kyle Elizabeth Freeman
Professional Nester

P.S. To give you a clear idea of "redesign" please check out this Cloud 9 video. This home reflects a vintage modern style, but I transform rooms of all types of style (e.g. classic traditional, victorian, country, eclectic):

SERVICES & RATES

There are two ways for us to work together: I come to you (House Call Appointments) or you come to me (Studio Appointments or Workshops),with options for all incomes. The benefit of me being in your space is obvious. But,if your budget is limited or you're looking for inspiration, we can accomplish plenty from my home studio in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. Using photos of your space, I can help you with product research and decorating coaching, and give you outside-the-box ideas from my own home!

Cloud 9 House Call Appointments are typically available between 1:30 & 6:30 pm, seven days a week. My work schedule varies from week to week, but within the month we can usually find the day per week that you need. Studio Appointments and Workshops offer a lttle more flexibility, as they are sometimes available in the evening.

Cloud 9 focuses on redesign, the concept of redecorating, using what you already own. But I also offer a number of supplemental services, described below. After you take a peek at the scope of services, contact me at 617.524.5815 for your initial phone consultation. Together we'll figure out which ones are a fit and how Cloud 9 can best support you.

  • The Classic One-Room Redesign

This is Cloud 9's signature service. The Classic One-Room Redesign offers an immediate and eco-friendly alternative to traditional decorating services. And you get a "new" room for way less than it would cost to buy a new couch! I transform your space by repurposing, restyling, and rearranging the furnishings and decorations that you already own instead of buying new things that may or may not "fix" the space.

The Classic One-Room Redesign begins with an assessment of your requirements and goals for the space. Then we take a tour of your home to contextualize the relationship between the various rooms, and to “shop” for other pieces in the home that could be used in the redesigned space. Next, we dismantle the current room to provide our blank slate. And finally, Cloud 9 artfully rearranges and repurposes your current furniture, lighting, artwork and decorations to revolutionize the space. On average, a one-room redesign takes 4-5 hours, sometimes less, sometimes more.

Still need convincing that this type of one-day decorating is well worth it? Click here to see Cloud 9 before and after photos.

The Classic One-Room Redesign usually requires the able-bodied help of two people besides myself, to assist with moving furniture. To save money, those two people can be the client, plus a family member / friend, or I can provide an assistant(s) at additional cost.

Cost: $395 per room (+ $100 for assistant, if needed but client can avoid this cost as described above)

  • Redesign for Nooks & Crannies

Maybe you're generally happy with your rooms but you have a few, smaller trouble spots, like bookshelves, mantels, china cabinets or hutches that could be displaying your treasured objects more beautifully. Cloud 9 can target those smaller nooks and crannies in your home by emptying them out, editing and redisplaying your decorations. Sometimes these smaller rearrangements make an amazing difference in the look and feel of your rooms.

Cost: $250 for 2 hour appointment. If your needs and our schedules allow us to go beyond the 2 hour appointment, additional time is charged at rate of $95/hour in 15 minute increments.

  • Cloud 9 Consultation

Most clients prefer The Classic One-Room Redesign service because I get my hands on your things, moving and creating until we come up with the most pleasing arrangements. But you can hire Cloud 9 to just look at your space, give you ideas, and instruct you on the steps of redesign so that you can implement independently.

Cloud 9 can also consult with you about how you are using all the spaces in your home, to help you come up with a master plan to maximize room layouts and utilization.

Or, maybe you feel like you have a decent eye for design but crave some back-up support? Have you done some of your own legwork on picking out material samples and furnishing options but need a second opinion to finalize choices and think about how it all goes together? Do you need help picking out colors for one or two rooms? Are you feeling unclear about where to start your decorating process?

Cloud 9 does NOT offer nuts-to-bolts "empty room" decorating or whole-house color consulting, but I do provide coaching for clients who aren't interested in working with traditional interior designers (who manage the process for you and access to-the-trade materials), but instead want to work with a decorating collaborator who can help you research and make decisions about retail furnishings and decorations.

Cost (House Call Appointment): $250 for 2 hour consultation. If your needs and our schedules allow us to go beyond the 2 hour consultation, additional time is charged at rate of $95/hour in 15 minute increments.

Cost (Studio Appointment): $150 for 2 hour consultation. If your needs and our schedules allow us to go beyond the 2 hour consultation, additional time is charged at rate of $65/hour in 15 minute increments.

  • Product Research

Cloud 9 helps you research and decide on the best purchases (e.g. furniture, textiles, decorations) for your spaces. Cloud 9 does not deal with interior designer trade-only sources. Instead, I maintain an extensive database of local and online retail sources for furnishings and housewares, new or secondhand, spanning all price ranges.

The Product Research service can be used as part of a Cloud 9 Consultation (see above for rates). This service is an especially good use of the Cloud 9 Studio Appointments. With the studio’s large screen monitor, we can see multiple products side by side, helping you make clearer decisions and better visualize how multiple items coordinate.

This service can also be a stand-alone service, following one of your Cloud 9 appointments, during which we've talked about what you still need for your spaces. For example, at the end of a Classic One-Room Redesign, we may discover that you could really use a floor lamp and a couple throw pillows. I go back to my office, do some online research, and then I send you a compilation of great options.

Cost: $65/hr from my home office

  • My House Tour @ The Cloud 9 Studio

My home isn’t fancy or high-end. But it is cozy, fun, and peaceful and it makes people feel good. It’s my laboratory, where I constantly change things around and play with new ideas, no matter how unusual. My home is proof that you too can create a memorable, magazine-worthy space on a secondhand budget.

Through my Cloud 9 workshops I’ve discovered that the tour of my home is one of the most informative and inspirational services I offer. You and I take a detailed stroll through each room, including closets and other storage nooks. It’s a chance to pick up new organizational and decorative ideas for your own home, and to learn about elements of design. You can ask any question you’d like (e.g. where I bought things, why I designed things the way I did - there’s usually a method to my madness, and how could we apply the ideas to your home).

This service is available through Cloud 9 Consultation (Studio) Appointments or Cloud 9 Workshops. The advantage of taking the tour during a one on one Studio Appointment is that we can talk in much more detail about how to translate the ideas to your own home.

  • Cloud 9 Workshops

Workshops are the most affordable way to work with Cloud 9.

Each participant sends me photos of a space they’d like help with, and as a group we look at those photos on a 52 inch television. I’ll give ideas for each person’s space, and teach elements of design and organization in the process. The workshop also includes a tour of my home. Feedback from past workshops reveals that the house tour is one of the most informative and inspiring aspects of the workshop! I stumbled across a couple of online reviews of my workshops, which might give you a better sense of the workshop experience. Click here for one review, and here for another.

One of the best ways to control availability of a workshop is to gather your own group of five friends. You’re welcome to bring snacks and drinks if you’d like it to feel more like a fun night out!

Cloud 9 Workshops are $75 / person for a three hour workshop. Workshops have no more than five people so that everyone gets individualized attention.
